Description
Just like other schools, CMU offers campus tours which allows students to get a general sense of what it is like to study here. However, we think that there are limitations to the current student campus tour model in terms of displaying the academic life and opportunities that CMU provides for its students. For example, students are brought around campus by student tour guides, and from our past experience, we found there to be not enough elaboration on what it is like to be a student at CMU besides student life from the perspective of the student tour guide. As a result, students have little knowledge of how the school can help them become the people they want to be in the future through classwork.
The Technology
01
Alumni Wall
To dive deeper into the alumni interaction, we start off with a beginning screen for the visitor to select their personalized tour experience. Once they select their Alumni Tour guide, they will walk over to the alumni wall to begin the tour.At the Alumni donor wall, the tour guide alumni name tags will light up and once the student touches the plaque, the alumni will appear. The Alumni is a life sized hologram and will talk about their experience at CMU. There’s also a panel on the left that talks about the details of the alumni like graduating year, major, and what they are doing now.
02
Guided Path
Moving onto the interface of the tour, the tour menu will pop up if the visitor looks at their arm and they can select multiple features like share to social media, take a picture, save to bookmarks, or view the map. The visitor is guided by these appearing and disappearing guides on the floor that give people a sense of where they should be going.
03
Snap Shot
Once the user chooses the camera function on the menu, a frame will appear and when the hololens sense that the user’s hands stopped in a position for more than 3 seconds it will initiate a count down and that’s how a photo is taken. This feature allows visitor to take photos of things in AR and in the real world. It allows the user to take snapshots of moments they want to remember during their tour and be able to store their memories to the cloud for later access at home or for sharing with family and friends.
